Barrels Over Bottles

by Justin Goldman

When DeLoach Vineyards proprietor Jean-Charles Boisset hosted parties at his home, his friends kept telling him how they enjoyed drinking wine from the barrels he kept. So, De- Loach’s Barrel to Barrel program was born.

About a year ago, DeLoach began selling 10-gallon barrels to local restaurants. Barrel to Barrel was such a hit that DeLoach now sells three-gallon barrels of Russian River Pinot to individual consumers at the winery in Santa Rosa and the new Boisset Taste of Terroir tasting room in Healdsburg. The barrels have an environmental benefit: an eco-bag, which goes inside the barrel, keeps your wine fresh for six to eight weeks, and the elimination of bottles cuts down tremendously on packaging waste.

The Barrel to Barrel program is also cost-efficient: Replacement wine bags are $60 each (for a first-time purchase, you get a barrel and a bag for $250). Each bag holds the equivalent of four $24 bottles of Pinot. Do the math, and you’ll see that this is one barrel ride not to be missed.
