I grew up in Monterey and this is my favorite time of year. There's something about walking on the beach during the winter, it's more peaceful, serene, a time of reflection. Although one night, my friends were walking ahead of me and their footprints glowed in the dark like fairy dust! This set us to dancing and prancing around on the beach... I recommend the experience! The light turned out to be caused by little phosphorescent sea creatures that sometimes light up the waves.
It's quiet here in the winter: very little traffic, no crowds, no waiting for a table at a restaurant and the locals have plenty of time to talk. Very friendly people - it's that kind of place.
In one of these newsletters I'll provide a list of recommended reading. In honor of his birthday this month, I entrust you to a popular local author, the sometimes controversial, John Steinbeck who did an excellent job of capturing the flavor of Monterey in his "Cannery Row" and "Tortilla Flat." Happy Birthday John! Here's a toast to you!
