Sterling
Vineyard's 35th Anniversary

Celebrating 35 Spectacular Years of Excellence
For more than three decades, visitors to the Sterling
Vineyards hilltop winery have enjoyed a spectacular treat. Perched
high atop a 300-foot knoll, the winery’s distinctive
architecture is reminiscent of Mykonos Island in Greece, and offers
stunning panoramic views of the Napa Valley in all directions. An
upcoming celebration of their milestone 35th birthday reaches into
the history of the winery, pouring from it for the enjoyment of lucky
guests visiting during a special Anniversary Open House Weekend in
late April.
Sterling's unique, progressive self-guided tour allows
visitors to enjoy a series of matchless wine country vignettes at their
own pace. You will want to stop to appreciate glorious open-air
windowpane views, the artful winery structure frames awesome vistas
of Calistoga and the upper Napa Valley. Recently, large plasma
screens were installed at key winemaking areas along the tour, so that
visitors can view the activity seen if they were lucky enough to be
in the same spot during harvest. At the Barrel Room, video is
complemented by an interesting display showing samples of different
levels of oak barrel toast levels and how their flavors affect the
wines…scratch and sniff! The videos are engaging and informative
as well.
Of course, Sterling is famous for their wines. Sterling
uses fruit from all three of the significant microclimates of the Napa
Valley—Calistoga (a hot pocket ideal for Sauvignon Blanc), down-valley
(for the core varietal Cabernets & Merlots), and Carneros (the
cooler southern area, ideal for Pinot Noir & Chardonnay). Sterling
employs techniques such as cold-soaking fruit to retard fermentation,
and pulling the skins away from the juice at the critical point before
harsh tannins develop. The result is the signature richness and
smoothness that is the trademark of the terrific drinkability of Sterling
wines.
The Main Tasting Room atrium offers table service, so
relax and enjoy the legendary Sterling hospitality as you taste the
wines. In good weather the adjacent terrace is always busy, and
what a stunning view! In the Reserve Room, older vintages from
the 70’s and 80’s of the premium Diamond Mountain Cabs will be offered
for the Anniversary Event. The Club Room and Reserve Room always
offer premium tastings (additional cost), and the special wines offered
at the event truly magnify that value! Finally, when you are
ready to purchase these treasures in the Wine Shop, the variety of
interesting gourmet, wine and logo items will interest everyone in
your party.
For the Anniversary Celebration, Saturday and Sunday
April 24 and 25, the remarkable Sterling experience is enhanced with
special tastings positioned at key spots on the tour, and a commemorative
souvenir wine glass. The visitor fee for the Sterling Vineyards
Anniversary Open House Weekend will be only $15 per person, which includes
the ride up the on the one-of-a-kind aerial tram, the self-guided tour,
special tastings including library wines and the commemorative
glass, for all guests. The Sterling Tour always offers great
value at $10, and is certainly an exceptional value for this event!
Reservations are not required, but Sterling does get
busy, a line can develop down at the tram. A good plan is to
start your day at Sterling, and work your way down the valley or through
the rest of the Calistoga area after you enjoy this inspiring destination.
Sterling Vineyards is located at 1111 Dunaweal Lane,
just south of the town of Calistoga at the top of the Napa Valley. Hours
are 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily (closed Easter). More information

Hennessey
House – Napa’s 1889 Queen Anne Victorian B&B
This elegant
Napa Bed and Breakfast has everything a savvy traveler would
expect; charming accommodations, central location, friendly knowledgeable
hosts, incredible food and an interesting history. Dr. Edwin
Hennessey built Hennessey House in 1889 and the property is currently
on the National Register of Historic Places. Architecture buffs
will appreciate the original woodwork and decor throughout the mansion. Most
impressive is the stamped-tin hand-painted dining room ceiling installed
in the early 1900’s.
Each of the ten guest rooms is unique and beautifully
decorated with exquisite European antiques. Most guest rooms
have fireplaces and claw foot bathtubs for soaking as you sip on
complimentary sherry and nosh on chocolate. Choose to
stay in the main house, or for a more private experience, sleep in
the original Carriage House with its authentic carriage house doors. Two
of the rooms have skylights perfect for a lazy afternoon of reading
or napping in the quietness.
Let
the Hennessey House plan your itinerary for you! They truly take
pleasure in planning your stay from providing a gourmet picnic for
your day of wine tasting in the Napa Valley, to hiking and biking to
mud baths or riding in a hot air balloon. Choose from a variety
of carefully
planned packages or create
an unique experience to fit your needs. Before heading out
to explore the beautiful Wine Country, start your day at Hennessey
House with a full gourmet breakfast in the main house, vibrant gardens
or in the privacy of your guest room. Tea is served at three
o’clock accompanied with freshly baked goodies. In the evening,
join the other guests for a wine and cheese reception on the patio.
For your next visit to the Napa Valley, be sure to
reserve your room at Hennessey House for first-class accommodations
and service. Be
sure to check out their Specials! Call
707-226-3774 or email for reservations.

Wine Country Recipe

Chevre
Cheesecake with Biscotti Crust
Crust
6 ounces soft butter
1-1/2 cup confectioner's sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup biscotti crumbs
1/2 cup ground walnuts
Filling
2 cups cream cheese, room temperature
1 cup goat cheese
4 eggs
1/2 cup sugar
1 tablespoon chopped rosemary
1 teaspoon salt
Preheat over to 225 degrees. Place butter, confectioner's
sugar, flour, walnuts and biscotti crumbs in a 5-quart mixing bowl
with a paddle attachment. Beat on low speed until ingredients are incorporated.
Do not cover mix.
Press the dough into pan, being careful to press the
dough evenly on the bottom and sides of pan. Place pan in the refrigerator
for 30 minutes to allow the dough to set. Place cream cheese and goat
cheese in a 5-quart mixing bowl with paddle attachment and beat on
low speed until incorporated. Add eggs one at time until incorporated.
Add sugar, rosemary, and salt. Mix for one minute.
Remove pan with crust from the refrigerator and pour
the batter into the pan. Place in oven and bake for 2 minutes. Check
for doneness with a toothpick or cake tester. The toothpick will be
clean and the cheesecake will not be fluid. If the batter is still
runny, turn the oven off and allow cake to remain in the oven until
firm. Remove from oven and allow to cool.
