MONDOVINO Comes To DVD!

MONDOVINO COMES TO DVD!"A Fahrenheit 9/11 for the grape." - MSNBC

The ultimate film about wine and wine culture, 'Mondovino' offers an unprecedented look into the conflicts, conspiracies and alliances of the wine trade. Filmed by award-winning director Jonathan Nossiter, 'Mondovino' has sparked controversy in its theatrical run among wine producers, distributors and consumers as it shed light on the esoteric world of wine. 'Mondovino' is an epic exploration into the modern world of wine spanning three continents and five languages, over a three-year period. Juxtaposing artisan wine growers with multi-national conglomerates, and peasants with billionaires, the film gives voice to those who create, critique and are involved in the commerce of wine. The feature length documentary had its world premiere and was an Official Selection at the 2004 Cannes International Film Festival and was seen for the first time in North America at the 2004 Toronto International Film Festival. Order your copy of 'Mondovino' today at www.specialtydvd.com or www.amazon.com.

TEMECULA VALLEY TRAVEL ITINERARY

Temecula Travel Itinerary

Warm Days, Cool Wines in
Southern California

Not too far from popular Southern California tourist attractions like Disneyland and Sea World is a different kind of wine country destination.  That the surprising Temecula Valley is such a lively wine area, and is one located so conveniently for tours deep in the southern part of the state, will be a revelation to those who have never visited.  This fairly hot growing area is best known for cool, crisp, refreshing white wines, but also presents some excellent reds, along with a generous selection of ports and other tasty dessert wine treats.

For decades, the quality wines and hospitality of Temecula wineries have been of interest to those in the know.  We took a day off from the beach in San Diego to explore the growing reputation and distinctive style of South Coast Wine Country.  Following an easy one-hour drive (one-and-a-half hours if you are coming from Los Angeles), we headed east of Old Town Temecula from US Highway 15.  Here lays a very compact wine-producing area, neatly nestled amongst the area’s citrus groves and hillside avocado ranches.  The majority of vineyards and wineries are conveniently lined up along a five-mile stretch of picturesque Rancho California Road.

This likable area was very busy on the Thursday we visited, with a few surfers and tourists mingling with crowds of women escaping nearby suburbia for the day.  The pleasant weather of a late spring morning was an agreeable treat, and as the day heated up the area’s warm hospitality kept us cool everywhere we went.

A TASTE OF REDWOOD VALLEY

Redwood Valley

Enjoy A Genuine Northern California
Wine Atmosphere

There is something truly special happening in Redwood Valley, a first class wine-producing area in northern Mendocino County, just northeast of Ukiah.  Here a small-town, old-California feel harkens to decades of wine enjoyment.  Located directly two hours north of San Francisco on US Highway 101, many of the folks in this friendly neighborhood have been supplying quality fruit to the venerable Mendocino Parducci and Fetzer brands, amongst others, for generations.

Nowadays, they are increasingly celebrating their own family winemaking traditions, bringing handcrafted wines to a somewhat larger audience, and with great success.  Small artisans dominate the area; there are no mega-winery projects here in the valley.  More and more, they celebrate their own winemaking along with lots of authentic hospitality, pouring the delicious fruit of dedicated labors.

With just a single day to spend at the area’s popular annual Father’s Day weekend event A Taste of Redwood Valley, our appetite was greatly enhanced to enjoy more of the outstanding wines that this picturesque area has to offer.  A few of these wineries with tasting rooms in Hopland to the south had their barns and winemaking facilities open for this event.  After one action-packed, enjoyable day, we had developed a far greater appreciation for the talent and accomplishment of the folks who make these Redwood Valley wines so special.

2003 Barra Sangiovese
2003 Barra Sangiovese

All-organic fruit from Barra of Mendocino’s Redwood Valley Vineyards graces a complex wine with solid acidity, making it very pasta and marinara friendly.  A pleasant, characteristic strawberry flavor in the fruit is perfectly matched with smooth tannins.  For the recently released 2003 vintage, 14% Zinfandel was added, further brightening the Sangiovese fruit, and 4% Petite Sirah darkens the character and extends the finish.  A nice buy at $16.50.
